Purpose Of the Marine Corps League
To preserve the traditions and to promote the interests of the United States Marine Corps League.

To fit it's members for the duties of citizenship and to encourage them to as able as they have served the nation under arms.

To hold sacred the history and memory of the men who have given their lives to the Nation.

To foster love for the principles which they have supported by blood and valor since the founding of the Republic.

To maintain true allegiance to American institutions;

To create a bond of comradeship between those in service and those who returned to civilian life.

To aid voluntarily and to render assistance to all Marines and former Marines, as well as to their widows and orphans.

To perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps and fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical events of particular interest to Marines.
Historical Background
The Marine Corps League was organized by an Act of Congress in 1937 as a National Organization. In March 1947 a group of former Marines in the Plainfield area decided to organize a local charter group and form a Detachment.

After some deliberation the Detachment was named after Joseph J. Gardner, a Guadalcanal Marine who returned home only to meet with a fatal auto accident with his bride, while on their honeymoon.

The first meeting was held March 1947 in the Park Hotel, Plainfield. Officers were elected at this time with Marine Edward Beams installed as the First Commandant.

Any honorably discharged or active Marine is welcome to join the Marine Corps League and partake of the proud tradition it recognizes.

Membership Wanted!
We are always looking for new members who have served or are currently serving in the Marine Corps.
We who have served are an elite group and our experiences and thoughts should be shared with others who understand our experience. Using our knowledge of teamwork we can continue to help others in the community that are unable to do so for themselves.

We help at the V.A. hospital by taking time to visit or bring clothing and food. Many times, simply the voice of a friend in arms can bring comfort to a resident. Visting families of Marines that are away or are in poor health provides a network of support for family members. A phone call or a letter means a lot.
We assist with the Toys for Tots program, which is nationally recognized, bringing joyful holiday seasons to those less fortunate.
